Upon meeting character actor Anthony Zerbe, he took lessons from Anthony, and studied acting with Stella Adler in New York City at the Herpolscheimer School of Performing Arts.

Thomerson started a career as a stand-up comedian after his college term had ended, perfecting his skills. He played in clubs including Greenwich Village’s The Bitter End, Los Angeles’ The Improv, Capture a Rising Star and the Catskills.

Thomerson ‘s long television career has appeared in dozens of films since the 1970s; he played in Car Wash a memorable minor role, in Fade to Black (1988) and in Jerry Moriarity, a criminal psychologist.

In 1985 Thomerson appeared in the low-budget science fiction film Trancers, produced by Charles Band and Empire Pictures, as the time-traveling future cop Jack Deth. The role made him a B-movie genre symbol and led Thomerson to develop a working relationship with the bands.

He was intended to appear in the Pulse Pounders section but it was never done in the end. Thomerson reunited for the World War II science fiction film Zone Troopers in 1986 with a couple of his Trancers co-stars; he also starred in the vampire film Near Midnight.

In science fiction film Cherry 2000, he played an antagonist opposite the heroine of Melanie Griffith. In the Disney made-for-TV movie, The B.R.A.T. Patrol, Major Dan Hackett also stars Sean Astin, Nia Long, and Brian Keith opposite.

One of his first projects, after Charles Band released the Full Moon Features at the end of the 1980s, was the Trancers II (1991) sequel in which Thomerson rejoined most of the first movie’s casts. For the next three sequences Thomerson will appear later, before the Trancers 6.
