Edmondson was active in NXIVM, a New York-based movement, Albany. Upon leaving in early 2017, she publicly criticized the group, alleging that she had been invited to “DOS,” an NXIVM substructure run by Keith Raniere and Allison Mack, and had been branded with Raniere’s and Mack’s initials at Mack’s Albany home.
Edmondson revealed NXIVM to the public in the New York Times. Edmondson lodged a lawsuit with the New York State Department against Danielle Roberts, an osteopathic surgeon, claiming that Roberts had done the branding.
The Agency responded that it had no authority as the suspected acts had not taken place in a doctor-patient relationship, and urged Edmondson to report the matter to the police.
Following claims made by Edmondson and others, Roberts was removed from practicing in the Wisconsin Hospital System, where she practiced between 2012 and 2014. Raniere and Mack were subsequently charged on charges related to DOS; a trial was set for January 2019.
Edmondson was the subject of the 2018 CBC podcast: Uncover: Escaping NXIVM, an investigative podcast series about the party, its leader Keith Raniere, and a woman’s quest to get out.
