In Oakland, California, Whelan is raised. Whelan submitted her school photo to the San Francisco Talent Agency after hearing and taking part in a local production of The King and I, at the age of 8, and released a series of TV commercials.

An M&M advert got her heard by the producers and got her cast in Friends (1979), which was soon cancelled. Around the same time, at the age of 11, she was cast as Vicki, the daughter of Captain Stubing, initially as a guest star, but later on she made regular appearances.

In 1984 Whelan studied English Literature at Guildford College in Surrey, England, and graduated from Buckley School in the Sherman Oaks, California (close to classmate friend Laura Dern).

Whelan has appeared in The Love Boat on many TV shows including M.D., Matt Houston, Fantasy Island (twice), Vegas, Trapper John and Network Star War.

She played the role of a patient in the airplane, Lisa Davis, at the end of 1979! Whelan moves to New York City and works as an event planner at Madison Square Garden in the mid 1980s, when she comes back from England and the Love Boat series comes to an end.

In 1999 Whelan began working for the 1210 WPHT radio station as radio host and, after graduating, an investigative maker of the Los Angeles TV channel KCOP.

The episode of The Weakest Link, a quiz show hosted by Anne Robinson, features Whelan on November 25, 2001. She defeated the others and won her charity for $57,000.
