Derrick Lassic’s Career
Lassic was selected in the fourth round (94th overall) of the 1993 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. After Emmitt Smith contract holdout extended into regular season, the team was forced to field him in the first two games (both losses). He was the first rookie to run back in the history of the league to start a season opener for a reigning Super Bowl champion, and the third rookie to start a season opener in franchise history.
While Smith signed in time against the Phoenix Cardinals for the third game, Lassic still began and led the team in rushing with 60 yards on 14 carries, scoring his first 2 touchdowns during a 17–10 victory. His workload was reduced significantly from that point on the way to the Cowboys winning back-to-back Super Bowls.
He rushed for 269 yards and 3 touchdowns 75 times in 1993 but endured the national burden and loyalty his teammates had towards Smith. Erik Williams criticized Lassic’s running style, saying “He’s going too hard. We’ve got a flow and he’s not able to see it,” Nate Newton said, “Lassic was a good boy, but we needed Emmitt in the lineup if we wanted to get back to the Super Bowl. He was hampered the next season with a torn ligament that he sustained during a pre-season game in his right knee, until he was placed on the injured reserve list on December 6, 1994. He is remembered in Cowboys lore for being the starting running back for the 1993 season’s first two games, when Smith held out in a contract dispute.
In the 1995 NFL Expansion Draft the Carolina Panthers picked him from the Cowboys roster. On 28 August, after suffering from knee, hamstring and thigh injuries in the training camp, the team reached an injury settlement with him.
