Deborah took up low paying jobs to support herself and her young son, Marshall Mathers III (Eminem), after her husband left her and their baby son. The mother-son couple lived in poverty and traveled frequently between Kansas City and Detroit. She is believed to have falsely accused other organisations for extracting money from them. Eminem also mentioned later that his mother had never worked, and that they relied on social organizations welfare. It was apparent that her relationship with her son had been quite strained.
